A murder investigation in Jersey that lasted several months and cost police £4.5M came to an end when it was concluded that no murders had taken place. Residents of the island had told officials that, between 1960 and 1986, children were severely beaten, raped, and killed in Haut de la Garenne, an old children care home. A mass excavation of the site turned up bone fragments and milk teeth belonging to about 65 children. All suspicion ceased when the items were dated from 1470 to 1670. The careless investigation has resulted in chief officer Graham Power's suspension.

A separate investigation on the island has found evidence of child abuse. In calling for an independent inquiry into the rampant child abuse that has occurred in Jersey, UK Care Leavers Association chairman, Will McMahon, gave this oddly familiar quote: “Only then, and only after reparation being made to the victims, will Jersey be able to look to the future.”
