British Parliament has voted against an amendment that would criminalize spanking children. 424 MPs voted against the amendment, while only 75 voted for it. Records show that over 50 children die each year at the hand of their parents. Though it is a crime to strike any adult, the same does not apply to children. Labor health committee chairman David Hinchliffe, an advocate of the amendment, said, "That is equality and children - far more fragile and vulnerable than us - deserve nothing less."
The lack of enthusiasm to ban the beating of children shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. England's pathetic history of bullying those who can't fight back is an unfortunately long and bloody one. From the massacre of the Ottomans in 1884, where they murdered or wounded over 25,000 defenseless men, to their decimation of the Australian aborigines, England will never cease to impose their despicable will on the powerless.
