Blasphemous British Teacher Defies Laws of Islam, Sudan

11.26.2007

Philadelphia, PA – November 26, 2007

A British teacher is spending her second night in a Sudanese prison after displaying a clear lack of respect for Islamic law and the native culture of the country in which she is living and working. Gillian Gibbons was arrested on Sunday after Sudanese police raided Unity High School for naming a classroom teddy bear Muhammad after the late profit of Islam. Unity High School is one of several exclusive British-run schools that date back to colonial times in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. The fifty four year old teacher could be publicly lashed or spend up to six months in prison if she is convicted on charges of blasphemy.

It is no surprise that Ms. Gibbons failed to respect the cultural practices and laws of the Sudanese people; the British have acted with self-proclaimed impunity since the aforementioned Unity High School was founded after Britain seized control of Sudan and Egypt in 1882. Gilliam is an excellent example of the typical British disregard for native cultures and we hope her punishment will serve to remind the world of British misrule and its continuing consequences.
