Guess Who Came In Last In A Survey Of The Best Places To Live In Europe?

10.12.2009 - Britain is the worst place to live in Europe (despite our big pay packets)

Why it's our old friend the UK! That's right, in a study ranking the best places in Europe to live in, the UK came in dead last.

A perfect storm of long working hours, less time off, less sunshine, higher cost of living, older retirement age, and lower life expectancy forced Britain into the European basement; while France, with more time off, more sunshine, a lower retirement age, and a higher life expectancy, was voted the best place in Europe in which to reside.

About the only thing Britons have going for them is that they make substantially more money annually than the rest of Europe. But when you realize that all that money goes to keeping a roof over their heads, food on the table, cigarette in their mouths, and beer in their glasses, it ceases to be much of an incentive.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, the company responsible for the study, had some interesting things to say about Britain's deplorable ranking:

"There is more to good living than money and this report shows why so many Brits are giving up on the UK and heading to France and Spain. We earn substantially more than our European neighbors...but it's not helping us achieve the quality of life that people in other countries enjoy. For too long the focus in the UK has been on standard of living rather than quality of life. As a result we have lost all sense of balance between wealth and well-being."

Of course, if all you want to with your life is wallow in misery, there's no better place in Europe (and probably the world) to do so than in the UK!
